Longmont Police engaged in a high-speed chase through Longmont, early this morning, that ended just south of the Berthoud Parkway.
Around 7 a.m. a Longmont officer was patrolling the area of Spencer Street and Ninth Avenue when an Audi A4 pulled into traffic in front of him. Unable to locate a license plate at the rear of the car or in the window, the officer maneuvered into a better position to check for the plate.
Anticipating the vehicle could be spotted on Hover Road, the officer “pulled up to the intersection of 11th Avenue and Hover Road,” according to the officer’s report. There the officer found the Audi headed northbound on Hover Road and noticed it had gained speed.
Before the officer pursued, the driver of the Audi made a turned eastbound on 11th Avenue.
“The vehicle had two occupants in the front seat and the driver ... had something metallic in his left hand. As he turned, I could see whatever it was in his left hand pointed at me. The object in his hand appeared to be a semi-automatic handgun,” according to the officer who wrote the report.
The officer performed a J-turn and pursued the car at a high rate of speed until the driver voluntarily pulled over just south of Berthoud Parkway. While on Colo. 287, the Audi reached speeds of 115 mph, according to the officer.
Two Larimer County deputies arrived on the scene where officers drew their weapons and relayed orders to the Audi’s occupants.
The driver and passenger of the Audi rolled the windows down on the car and stuck their hands out, according to the officer.
Both occupants were placed into custody. A search of the car uncovered several stolen items from Home Depot, the office reported. The search did not, however, find a handgun in the car. Police state that it appears the suspect may have been holding his phone and had it pointed in the officer's direction, according to Deputy Chief of Police, Jeff Satur.
The driver was later evaluated for drugs he claimed he had ingested immediately before stopping the car and was later taken to Boulder County Jail.
