The Weld County Sheriff’s Office (WCSO) brought renewed attention to a cold case from 1975 involving the murder of Marjorie Sue Fithian in a post on Facebook this week. The sheriff’s office said there are no new clues in the case after an extensive investigation.

On June 24, 1975, Fithian and her 18-month old son did not return to Greeley following a family visit in Denver. Fithian was found dead on a gravel road about 50 miles away from Denver.

When Fithian was found with a gunshot wound to the head, her uninjured son held her hand. On the 50th anniversary of the death, there are still no substantiated theories about how Fithian was murdered.

One of the original theories regarding the case came when a drug dealer claimed to be involved, but he retracted his statement and investigators found the theory to be false.

Hitchhiking and targeted murder theories have also been investigated by detectives in the five decades since her deceased body was found, but the WSCO said these leads have been “unproductive.” Her son doesn’t have memories from the day and investigators are still trying to find new leads to help solve the case.
