A new trail connecting Boulder and Erie is moving forward after Boulder County commissioners approved the project.

The Boulder to Erie Regional Trail (BERT) will provide an 8.5-mile path for cyclists and pedestrians, offering a safer way to travel between the two communities.

Trail Plan Approved for Boulder to Erie Connection

Boulder County commissioners have officially approved the Boulder to Erie Regional Trail (BERT), which will transform an unused RTD rail corridor into a recreational and commuting path.

This 8.5-mile trail will provide a safer, off-road option for those traveling between Boulder and Erie.

The project is expected to cost $30 million, with funding still being sought to begin construction.

Once completed, the BERT trail will give cyclists and pedestrians a secure route to travel between the two cities without the need to navigate busy roads.

The trail is also part of a larger effort to enhance the Boulder County Regional Trail Program, which aims to connect local communities with safe, accessible paths for outdoor activities.

BERT to Serve Commuters and Recreational Users

The BERT trail will be a key transportation route for both commuters and outdoor enthusiasts.

It will provide a safe, off-road path for cyclists who currently face dangerous conditions on busy streets.

The trail will also offer recreational users a chance to enjoy scenic views, including views of Boulder Creek and the nearby Flatirons.

Community feedback has been overwhelmingly positive, with 93% of survey respondents expressing interest in using the trail.

Many local residents see the trail as an important step in improving the quality of life in the area, providing a safer, more enjoyable way to travel and explore the region.

Funding and Timeline for Trail Construction

While the project has been approved, funding is still needed before construction can begin.

Fundraising and grant applications will take place in 2025, with construction potentially starting as early as 2027.

The trail will be built in phases, with the first segment connecting Erie and 109th Street.

Boulder County officials are currently working on a detailed design for the trail, which is expected to be completed by 2025.

The design process will include input from local residents and stakeholders, ensuring the trail meets the needs of the community.
