As winter settles in, more Coloradans are turning to assistance programs to help cover their heating bills.

The State's Low Income Energy Assistance Program (LEAP) has reported a significant rise in applications this year.

This growing need reflects the challenges many households face with increasing utility costs and colder temperatures.

Rising Need for Heating Assistance

LEAP has experienced an 8% increase in applications compared to the same period last year.

The rising demand is part of a pattern seen over the past five years, with more families and individuals seeking help.

Many applicants are first-timers who are finding it harder to manage household expenses as heating costs climb.

This year's spike in demand coincides with a recent rate increase by Xcel Energy, which raised monthly bills for residents.

With costs on the rise, more Coloradans are looking for ways to stay warm without sacrificing other essentials like food or medication.

LEAP Program Benefits and Eligibility

LEAP provides financial assistance to help low- and moderate-income households pay heating bills over a six-month period.

To qualify, applicants must meet income requirements based on household size, such as $40,584 for a single person or $78,060 for a family of four.

The program offers benefits ranging from $200 to $1,000.

The exact amount depends on factors like income level, energy prices, and the type of heating fuel used.

LEAP aims to prevent unsafe indoor temperatures while easing financial burdens on families.

How to Apply for Assistance

Coloradans can apply for LEAP now through April 30, 2025. Applications are simple and don’t require an office visit or an in-person interview.

They can be submitted online or through the mail for convenience.

Detailed information, including how to access the application, can be found on the LEAP section of the Colorado Department of Human Services website.

Applicants can also call the LEAP hotline for assistance with the process.
