Longmont High School senior Michael Martines dreams of becoming a professional artist, and last week he gained an award from the Longmont Artists’ Guild that took him one step closer to that dream.
“It’s a really big honor — it’s something I’ll be using on my resumes,” Martines said. “I put so much effort into my art, and I’m so proud that I’ve been able to get a chance to win such an award for all the hard work I’ve put in.”
Out of 10,000 works of art in the St. Vrain Valley Schools “Unframed Student Art Show,” the Longmont Artists’ Guild highlighted two dozen works with Excellence in Art blue ribbons, including one of Martines’ paintings.
The 12th grader has already been accepted into Colorado State University for painting, and said he’s working hard to obtain a scholarship.
The Longmont Artists’ Guild awarded blue ribbons to student artists of all ages:

Sarah Broers Brown, a renowned artist and Longmont Artists Guild representative, has been involved with the school district’s art show as a teacher and community member for 25 years. The artist said she’s been “awed every year” by the students’ work.
“This year’s SVVSD Student Art Show exhibited the exemplary creativity in the visual arts of students,” she said. “The team of Longmont Artist Guild member judges had a challenging job narrowing down awards winners at the high school, middle school and elementary levels who demonstrated the three 'Cs,' concept, composition and craftsmanship. So, congratulations to the Excellence in Arts awards recipients. I look forward to seeing your talent grow.”
A separate round of awards were presented to students from St. Vrain Valley Schools’ art teachers and administrators, said Janay Bird, fire arts coordinator for the district.
“Our art teachers can vote for three pieces that are not from their school, and our administrators can vote for three pieces from their schools,” Bird explained. “So every school is getting at least three St. Vrain awards.”
More than 50 local schools participated in the art show, which ran from Tuesday through Sunday.
