Rep. Karen McCormick is expected to win her second term in House District 11, which covers most of Longmont.
McCormick, a Democrat, is winning with 71.8% of the vote against Republican candidate Tara Menza in the second round of election results. While the count is unofficial, the margin is wide enough to call for McCormick as the winner of the house district representing much of Longmont.
“I’m just super pleased that the people of Longmont have decided to send me back,” McCormick said over the phone Tuesday night. “It tells me that I’m on the right track and that the things I care about the majority of Longmonsters care about as well. That they continue to think, at least the majority of people, that somebody that’s reasonable and data driven and just basically a problem solver is who they want in office.”
McCormick said that over the summer she spent a lot of time working on bills to address mitigating climate change, which she plans to focus on in the upcoming session. Further expanding reproductive health protections, especially Colorado sees a large uptick in the number of people coming from out of state for their abortions, is another priority.
McCormick added that gun violence protection and affordable and attainable housing are other topics she plans to spend a lot of time on. As chair of the House Agriculture, Livestock and Water Committee, the future of water in the state is a big focus as well.
“Being a headwater state, any way that we at the legislature can help support the water plan going forward, we have got to turn up the volume around water,” she said.
